*First off, I know it has been a while, but work and other-non-fashion blogging related duties call - I'll be back to more regular posts soon!

Anyway, back to the useful information, like how to keep your hair looking amazing despite humidity so thick you could probably bottle and drink the air. I recently got the chance to try HairPlay Salon's new eco-friendly styling products, SET and SEAL. The first is a setting lotion that you use before blow-drying, and the second is a shine serum that you use on dry hair.

Now, you should be aware that I have the kind of hair that gets huge and frizzy when it is humid, so keeping it under control is not always easy. Therefore, I was amazed that I experienced a mininum of unruliness when using both SET and SEAL - the setting lotion is particularly amazing for providing hold and a little flattering volume without stickiness. My hair even looks pretty decent the next morning now, which is impressive.

I just got the chance to review Practically Posh: The Smart Girl's Guide To A Glam Life by Robin Moreno and it was really a fun little book, and the photographs/overall design were adorable.

While none of the tips are incredibly groundbreaking, it is a fun summer read (it would be great for a plane ride), and you'll probably pick up some great party/entertaining tips - that was definitely my favorite section. And I've got to like someone who understands the pure happiness in a pitcher that is properly made sangria.

Denim or Not?

In my experience, you are either a denim person or not. Either you can't live without your jeans, or you can take them or leave them, if you even own a pair. I fall into the second category.

Therefore I don't quite get the whole designer denim thing, or even the need to own more than a couple pairs of jeans (I have probably six pairs, maybe three that I wear on a regular basis. All are at least one year old). Despite the fact that I own a ridiculous amount of shoes, lots of little dresses, a pile of scarves and a big tangle of jewelry, I could care less about jeans. And yes, I have the kind of job where I can generally wear jeans to work.

So therefore, denim aficionados - please explain it to me. What is the draw? Is it the feeling of wearing the perfect flattering pair of jeans? Are they just that comfortable? Am I just trying on the wrong brands? Seriously, I don't quite get it.

Summer Beauty Tips From The Fashionable Kiffen

Now that summer is in full swing and it is seriously hot and humid here in Chicago (and most other places), it is time to adapt your beauty routine to the weather, if you haven't already. So without further ado, here are my favorite summer beauty tips:

1. Your hair will not want to be straight or sleek in the humidity. Pick up a good styling cream or curling gel and go with it. Headbands are your friend, and fortunately there have been a lot of cute ones around lately.

2. Like your hair, your eye makeup will also not want to be perfectly defined. Smudgy cream shadows and smoky eyes are good; as is just throwing on some waterproof mascara and calling it a day (especially if you are at the beach/pool). I've mentioned it on this blog before, but Maybelline Sky High Curves is the most amazing mascara I've ever used - I actually prefer it to Diorshow and Mac's Fiberlash and other high end brands. I also like to do a bright eyeliner, like the turquoise shade from Dior's Diormania eyeshadow palette.

3. A sheer but bright lip gloss looks amazing, especially something that leaves a sheer stain like a popsicle. Nars Lip Lacquer in Hot Wired is my personal favorite for this look - it is a shocking fuschia shade that is perfect with a real or faux tan. Corals and cherry-red shades are excellent choices as well.

4, This one is a necessity - nice smooth, moisturized limbs, whether you decide to rock the pale look or go bronze. Hell, if you don't like to shave your legs keep your skin in good condition, it makes a huge difference. In fact, if you are like me and tend to shave last minute (sometimes using hair conditioner or lotion because you forgot to buy more shave gel), try the Schick Quattro razor. The good people at Schick were nice enough to send me one to try and it is fabulous - perfectly smooth skin and no nicks even if you are clumsy and/or trying to shave about ten minutes before you have to be out the door.

5. Cooling down - keep your body lotion in the fridge to cool yourself down after a long hot day. Simple but effective.

6. Pedicures! For the love of the fashion gods, if you are going to wear sandals prep your feet first. You don't have to go to a salon (I never do), but pumice your feet and paint your toes before you wear those fantastic new sandals, otherwise you are killing the whole effect. Yes, it seems painfully obvious, but I see enough "hooves" out there parading around in what would be pretty sandals to know otherwise.

Fashion in the City: A Few Observations

Like most women in my general demographic, I saw the Sex and the City movie this weekend. Now, I was never a major fan of the show - I liked it well enough, but it wasn't appointment TV for me or anything. I've always thought of it as the television equivalent of junk food: unrealistic, a little fluffy and overprocessed, but sometimes it just hits the spot.

The characters' clothes, however, those I could always appreciate, and the movie did very well in that regard, at least with the four main characters. Carrie's outfits were appealingly eccentric, Charlotte was all luxe-preppy and perfectly put together, Samantha was over-the-top and deliciously inappropriate, and they even let Miranda be pretty for once!

However, the side characters were kind of weak in the sartorial arena - perhaps Pat Field blew her load on the four girls? Jennifer Hudson should have had a much more interesting wardrobe, and the guys...well, they were just backup players for the women (that does make sense in the context of the show, but that doesn't mean their wardrobe had to be so bland).

Finally, I left the movie wishing that it was more...normal...to wear giant feathered hats/headpieces. Although if wearing feathers was normal, I probably wouldn't think they were so awesome.

Ode To Marshall's

My shopping philosophy tends to be along the lines of "never pay full price if you can help it"; therefore, stores like TJ Maxx, Filene's Basement, and yes, Marshall's tend to be regular haunts. So when Marshall's invited me to come in and "check out their shoes" - their new shoe Megashop, I was understandably thrilled. Good deals plus awesome shoes? I'm there! It sounds like a major cliche (fashion writer loves gorgeous yet impractical high heels? Gee, no one has written about that before), but the heart, it wants what it wants.

So last week I took my stylish self down to Marshall's (for the Chicagoans playing along, the one on Ontario right off Michigan Avenue) for some shoe shopping, despite the fact that I am possibly the last person on earth who needs another pair of shoes. Anything for the store that stocked my wardrobe with many great pieces at equally great prices over the years, right? Now, Marshall's Shoe Megashop is billed as 5000 feet of fantastic shoes, and at my local Marshall's there has to be at least this much space devoted to footwear.

Now, time and time again I've seen current pieces from brands like Nine West, Guess, Bandolino, Steve Madden, Enzo Anglioni, and other labels around that price point at Marshalls - I mean the very same shoes that are currently at full price in department stores; or if they are on sale in those stores, Marshall's still offers a better deal. On this particular trip, I also noticed a few brands I hadn't seen before - Giuseppe Zannotti (including a great pair of embellished sandals), Stuart Weitzman (a steal at around $120-150 per pair), and Calvin Klein.

My favorites? I'm a fan of Guess's stripper-chic heels, particularly when worn with a more modest outfit. There were also lots of gorgeous embellished flats that made me wish I actually liked to wear flat shoes (I'm short and in denial, also, I'm so used to wearing heels that flats are kind of painful). There were also some luscious cobalt blue patent peep Mary Janes that were calling my name. It was kind of like being a sugar addict in a bakery - so many delicious things, so little time.

The point of this post? Well, thanks to Marshall's for inviting me (and providing me with a gift card - although I guarantee I would have spent money at Marshall's of my own accord, and I'll certainly be back - oh, who am I kidding, I've already been back), and to let my lovely readers know that if they need a cheap and dirty shoe fix, there is a store ready to fulfill their needs. Seriously, very few pairs were over $50, and most were around $20-40, so you won't be out too much cash.

Sephora: The Makeup Junkie's Favorite Drug, Now In Book Form

I'll admit that prior to reading the Sephora book (Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority) I thought it would basically be one big Sephora ad. In some ways I was correct - the book never misses an opportunity to plug something the store carries - but Sephora stocks so many different brands and products that it didn't too one-sided or advertorial. In addition, the interviews with makeup artists and beauty experts were pretty interesting, and the glossary of ingredients is the kind of thing that could definitely prove useful.

Unsurprisingly, the book is filled with the lush photography that makes glossy magazines so appealing to cosmetic junkies everywhere. In fact, beauty junkies are probably the ones who would enjoy it the most (although some of the makeup application tips are probably a little too simplistic for them). It might also be a good bet for people who are just starting to get into wearing makeup, as it has some great basic information (and most of it translates across the board, so you don't necessarily have to shop at Sephora to get something out of it). All in all, this book was better than I expected.

I'd be willing to bet that many (if not all) of my readers recognize the link between art and fashion, and that fact that in some cases, fashion and art are essentially the same thing. After all, designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen (among others) have certainly created some gallery-worthy pieces. Thus my latest article in Second City Style - Fashion IS Modern Art.

Its Sandal Season!

In most parts of the northern hemisphere is now warm enough to wear sandals, and fortunately for shoe-coveting women everywhere, there are tons of fantastic options this season. Some of my personal favorites include strappy gladiator wedges (these can be difficult to pull off though), sky-scraping platform wedges, and anything beaded and heavily embellished (actually, ornate/elaborate shoes are always my favorites).

There are plenty of gladiator-esque shoes out right now, but I tend to prefer the wedge or high-heeled versions, partly because I am short and prefer to add some faux-height with my shoes, and partly because they are more flattering. Any shoe with straps around the ankle runs the risk of making your legs look stumpy, but flats are the worst culprit. Just say to no stumpifying shoes, please. Here are some choice selections:

Speaking of adding length to your legs and overall height, platform wedges are also big this summer, especially pairs with sculptural or highly detailed heels. Wedges made from cork are also very light and comfortable to wear - the cork is very shock-absorbent. Some of these shoes are basically small works of art you can wear, like these:

Glittery, sparkly, bejeweled, or otherwise embellished sandals are a perpetual hit. I'm loving all sorts of bold bright colors right, like orange, coral, and sunshine yellow. Try unusual combinations, like a turquoise sandal with a yellow dress or a royal purple shoe with red or blue. Also, mix your fancy sandals with more casual pieces, especially the flats - fun shoes should not be restricted to formal occasions and evenings. Here are some pairs that Cleopatra herself would approve of:

Of course, no matter which pair(s) of sandals you choose, make sure your pedicure situation is under control. I might be pointing out the obvious here (I know my fabulous readers would never leave the house unkempt!), but really, you don't need to go to the salon - home maintenance is not only fine, it is necessary.

My New Apartment: Interior Design & Home Fashion

The reason I haven't posted in a few days is that I just moved into a new apartment - one that is almost twice the size of my old one (yay!). Of course, that means I have significantly more room to decorate and the furniture and such from my old place is much more spread out - which means there is room for new stuff! I've got the furniture situation pretty much taken care of (new things are on the way), but I have tons of shelf space that is looking pretty bare.

Mother's Day Gifts: The Fashionable Mom

It is now less than two weeks until Mother's Day - have you found a gift or made plans with your mom yet?

Here are some of my favorite chic ideas:

If she is a jewelry person, a cute pair of earrings might be a thoughtful gift - and turquoise is a perpetual classic, and it is flattering on almost any skin tone.

Maybe she is more of a handbag fan? If your mother doesn't already have a Longchamp tote, and especially if she tends to err on the preppy side, one of those stylish bags could be a great and useful gift. If she is more of a glamourpuss, however, this burgundy beaded clutch might be a good call.

Another excellent option is high end cosmetics or skincare, or a decadent fragrance set; these are particularly good if she's not the type to splurge on herself. Buy her a luxe version of her favorite fragrance - and if you're not sure what that is, or just want to introduce her to something new, you can hardly go wrong with something from Guerlain.

Of course, gifts alone don't make the holiday, so if you can, why not make brunch or dinner for your mom, or clean/organize a room for her? It seems simple, but a break from household chores might be the most relaxing gift of all.

"ANYONE who pays attention to fashion may want to know that those in charge of deciding these things have pronounced doom on the dress. They, meaning mainly fashion editors and designers, claim the dress is dead. Kaput. Three years of women in dresses is enough.

“The eye is looking for something new, and so is the psyche,” Anne Slowey, the fashion news director of Elle magazine, said last week from the set of “Fashionista,” a new fashion reality show in which she will play herself, a fashion editor, only meaner. “The dress has been done to death,” Ms. Slowey added, “not to sound really cliché.”

Does anyone else think this is just a little off-base? I, for one, tend to think that the current popularity of the dress isn't going to wane any time soon. The article discusses how that, after the summer ends, women are going to hang up their dresses and go back to pants and pieces with a masculine edge this fall.

Now - there are plenty of women who are simply not that into dresses or skirts in general, and more power (and pants) to them. That said, most dresses are so easy to wear and so comfortable that I can't imagine women giving up that kind of effortless chic any time soon. Besides, you can always throw a leather jacket or menswear-inspired blazer over your dress for that harder edge.
So what do you think? Is the dress's current reign going to be over when fall hits, or are you forever a dress girl?

Travel Wardrobes 101

One of my fashion-related skills is packing light and packing well. For instance, I just went on a fairly long trip where I managed to fit everything I needed into a carry-on size backpack and my purse - and the fact that my load was light definitely made the entire experience more carefree and relaxing.

Here is my method (I usually set aside a few hours for packing as well):

1. Consider the reason for the trip - obviously, you will need different clothing for a professional/work type trip than you would for a vacation.

2. What is the climate and overall atmosphere/feel of the place like? - for instance, I'd probably take different clothing to say, Paris, than I would to somewhere more rural, or somewhere tropical.

3. Any special events - will there be a reason I need something formal? Anything else that might call for out-of-the-ordinary clothing? Any special accessories necessary? Make sure you pack those essentials first and foremost.

Now for the actual packing - I like to lay everything out on my bed or any other large flat surface, so I can see if the colors blend. This leads to my next point - I like to ensure everything I take can be worn as part of multiple outfits, which tends to mean I stick with one fairly neutral color family, e.g. blacks/grays/blues. Brighter colors and accents can be added with accessories.

For me at least, it's really important to see everything together like so I can edit out what doesn't belong. I tend to bring more tops than bottoms (a pair of jeans can be worn for more times than a shirt, usually) and I stick to darker colors, because they are less likely to stain. I also like to only bring one or two pairs of shoes - casual and dressy - simply because shoes take up tons of room. Same goes for handbags. However, I do pack lots of tiny/compact accessories like scarves and jewelry so I can mix up my outfits when I get bored.

I also try to edit down my beauty routine - I bring tinted moisturizer, mascara, one eyeshadow palette, and a lip gloss or two - and that is about it! Of course, sunscreen and essentials like shampoo are necessary as well, and if you travel a lot it is best to invest in a set of small containers you can fill up with your favorite products. Also, if you're going with friends or family, you might to consider sharing things like shampoo - not everyone needs to carry their own tube of toothpaste.

Last but not least, be sure to leave room for souvenirs!

European Observations

A few random observations from the other side of the pond:

1. Scarves. This is probably a stereotypical thing to say, but European women are just better at scarves - tying them, layering with them, mixing and matching them in unexpected ways - than their North American counterparts. I covet their skills.

2. Fashion risk-taking abounds, especially in Spain and especially in Barcelona.

3. Crocs. Why these clodhoppers are popular anywhere is beyond me (yeah, yeah, they are comfortable, cheap, etc.), but they have invaded Europe as well.

4. There is a general lack of blingy or otherwise bold logos that I find refreshing (the one exception would be soccer oops-I-mean-futbol gear, but that is mostly at the actual matches).

5. H&M's new Marimekko collection is pretty cute, if a little flimsy.

Yay or Nay: Leather Pencil Skirts

A while back I got an email from a reader, answered their question, and promptly forgot to post it on my blog (hey, at least I answered them, right?). Anyways, the question was about leather pencil skirts - trashy or potentially classy, with the right outfit? Or are they forever relegated to Halloween costumes and dominatrix apparel?

Now, any piece of leather clothing that is not a jacket can be tricky to wear - there is fine line between looking sleek and sexy and looking well, cheap. First of all, "fitted but not overly tight" should be your mantra; besides the fact that ultra-tight clothing flatters almost no one, you need to be able to walk in your skirt! Second, let the skirt be your va-va-voom eye-catching piece and keep the rest of your outfit on the tailored side. Crisp button downs, simple turtle-necks, and even basic tees all work.

Third, this is not the time to go for the mini - keeping it around knee-length is much more elegant. Last but not least, rich neutrals and jewel tones are easier to pull off than black or brights, so think chocolate, cognac, and burgundy, perhaps with interesting details like an embossed crocodile print.

Oscar Fashion! The Best of the Best

Since there are plenty of websites, blogs, and other news sources playing fashion police today, I thought I would stick to my favorite looks of the night:

"Lady in Red" could have been the theme song - lots of attendees chose saturated shades of red and combined the bold color with interesting necklines and draping.

Of course, black is always a classic and diamonds are definitely a girl's best friend (and Johnny Depp on your arm isn't a bad accessory either!).

Pale shades and sculptural silhouettes also made an appearance - and Dame Helen Mirren looked amazing as usual.

Mac's Fafi Collection

A gorgeous pair of shoes can lift your mood and a unique piece of jewelry can become your style signature, but your beautiful face is always your number one accessory. And while the natural look is perpetually in vogue, experimenting with bright colors is an excellent way to liven things up.

When it comes to makeup, I tend to prefer either a very simple, almost bare face or something bold, with strong smoky eyes or a pop of color. Therefore, it is probably no surprise that I enjoyed Mac's Fafi collection - it is colorful, fun, and playful. Although some of the more intense shades may seem over-the-top, they are surprisingly easy to wear. The collection itself was inspired by Fafi, a French graffiti artist who has painted - and left her Fafinette trademark - all around the world.

My favorites included the Fun 'n' Sexy lipstick (it goes sheer, like a pop of raspberry), the Totally It and Sugar Trace lipglass (Schiaperelli pink and champagne shimmer, respectively), the Rollickin' paint pot (aqua glimmer), and the Blacktrack fluid line, which was completely smudgeproof - I even left it on at the gym and it stayed put! The two blushes and the iridescent pressed powder were also great, and perfect for adding some much-need-life to my pale winter skin.

Here are some select quotes from the wonderfully generous people at Mac's* interview with Fafi herself:

Q: How did the collaboration between you and Mac come about?

A. It was like a movie! Mac was somehow connected to my L.A. gallery, and they requested that I meet them for a meeting. In New York there was snow everywhere, which made me very late, and I rolled in wearing these huge boots and feeling like this crazy French girl in an important American meeting. I had been dreaming about making my own cosmetics collection, and with their color range and commitment to representing different ethnicities, I knew it would be the right fit. I'm a very lucky girl. Two days later, they offered to work on a project with me, and that's when I started creating the three characters for this collection, which came naturally and smoothly, like a knife in butter!

Q: Can you introduce us to the world of the Fafinettes and the Carmine Vault?

A: The Carmine vault is a parallel world, it links to our planet but has many differences such as food, nature, and behaviour. We can meet the Fafinettes but there are also other creatures who are trying to live in harmony. I've been painting Fafinettes on walls since 1994 and at some point, three years ago, I decided they shouldn't be alone anymore, plus I wanted to add a richer universe to my creations.

Q: What was your previous experience in the world of beauty, if any?

A: I have always been crazy about black mascara! I think if there was just one piece of makeup I was allowed to take to a desert island that would be it. (I would use some fruit for my lips and cheeks!) I like the idea of crying with mascara. It's beautiful, plus it gives you expressive doll eyes. Overall, makeup is a way to transform your look. It makes us happy and gives us confidence.

Q: When did you first come up with the concept of tagging these girls?

A: At first I was painting these green Martians in profile, which was limiting because I couldn't express emotions, so I moved on to these more human subjects. The Fafinettes have been through an evolution. The've gone through more sexualized, even pornographic stages, and now it's becoming this whole universe with new characters in the Carmine Vault. Sexiness is not my main thing - it's more about being coy, a suggestion. Now that I have a child perhaps the Fafinettes are growing up a bit as well. They are less obvious. It's more about the attitude - not vulgar, but definitely defiant.

The Top Ten Spring 2008 Fashion Trends

Every season brings new (or not so new, in some cases) trends, as well as new ways to wear old favorites. Here are some of my favorites for spring 2008:

1. One-shoulder and assymetrical necklines - This silhouette can work for everything from elegant Grecian goddess looks to slinky disco dresses that are reminiscent of the seventies. And it is surprisingly flattering on many figures, because it draws the eye to the collarbone, neck, and shoulders.

2. Lingerie detailing - There is very romantic and feminine about pieces that borrow from the boudoir; however, this look can also veer into costume-y and/or trashy territory. Think off-duty Dita Von Teese, not Blonde Ambition-era Madonna.

3. Ombre or dip-dyeing - Done correctly, wearing ombre can be incredibly flattering (this is probably obvious, but wear the darker shades on the areas you want to draw attention from), and it is bold enough that few accessories are needed.

4. Boyish black tie - Most of us are no stranger to looks borrowed from the guy's side of the closet, but this spring the classic tuxedo jacket takes center stage.

5. Transparent and sheer fabrics - Clearly (no pun intended), the key to making translucent pieces work is some creative layering; but with a proper foundation, this trend can be girlish and sweet or downright sexy.

6. Neon - Yes, the word neon can evoke some frightening images of eighties fashion that are best forgotten. However, a bold slash of color can take an outfit from bland to "wow!" in a heartbeat, and besides, saturated color just looks so appealing after a long gray winter.

7. Black and white prints - While this combination is eternally stylish, there will be more black and white options than ever this spring, so stock up on basic silhouettes in graphic prints - they'll look amazing with bold accessories.

8. Safari chic - Although full-on look can be difficult to wear (just cause the city is an urban jungle doesn't mean you need to dress like it), a belted field jacket and anything animal print is modern and fresh.

9. Metallics - Okay, the sparkly stuff is pretty much a fashion staple now, but this spring's metallics are more burnished luxe than high-shine tin foil.

10. Eco-friendly labels - The "green" movement is all encompassing, and organic and sustainable materials are not only trendy, they are good for the environment. Al Gore would approve.

On A Shoe Quest

I'm on a shoe quest, and it is not going well. Let me explain - I need a pair of comfortable and sturdy shoes for an upcoming trip. They should be black or a neutral that works with black, because that is the base color of my travel wardrobe, and since I'll be walking a lot, comfort is key. However, I refuse to purchase a pair of unattractive shoes even if they are like walking on clouds, because, well, I just don't do ugly-comfy (yes, I am one of those people who can't stand Uggs, Crocs, or anything else in that category. It's a little snobby, but we all have those little things we're snobby about, right?). Also, the shoes need a bit of a heel - not only are all my pants hemmed to a wear-with-heels length, I'm so used to having that bit of extra height that flats are actually more painful than heels for me, at least for extensive amounts of walking.

So, do any of my wonderful readers have suggestions for shoes or brands? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This NY Times article supports my belief that Victoria's Secret is trying too hard to actually be sexy:

"Subtleties of eroticism can turn the banal into the fantastic, but Victoria’s Secret has not made its money by being subtle. Its apparent formula for mass-marketing fantasies is to turn the erotic into the banal.

Like a porn star with too many memoirs, Victoria’s secrets are pretty much overexposed at this point. “Ahh, whatever,” Victoria says. “Let me let you in on a little something, girls. You want sex? Hit the guy real hard with blunt sex objects.”

Voilà: Eros demythologized. All double entendres reduced to one big fat entendre for your retail convenience.

The Victoria’s Secret near Herald Square is a slick, two-story mega-sexopolis, catering mainly to the boudoir needs of angry tourists. If Siegfried & Roy ever wanted to start a Nevada chicken-ranch-plus-amusement park — a stretch-lace and animal-print McDonaldland of acceptable corporate erotica for the family casino crowd — this would be the ideal jumping-off point.

I think that Victoria's Secret is like the Paris Hilton of lingerie brands - it's overexposed and a caricature of what is supposed to be sexy.

*I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I like some of the clothes and shoes in their catalogs - but the items I like tend to be created by other brands and just sold by Victoria's Secret, e.g. Calvin Klein swimwear and Nine West shoes, so it doesn't really count, right?

Nine West: More Than Shoes

Mixing Black and Blue

Do you wear black and dark blue together? I know that many people consider it a faux-pas (e.g. "Don't mix black and blue, you'll look like bruise!"), but I think that black and a deep shade of blue can look incredibly elegant, and a little bit mysterious when done correctly. For instance, black opaque tights with a midnight blue dress, or navy satin top paired with tailored black pants or a suit. Personally, I like this combination better when there is some texture - when something silky, shiny, or nubby wool is involved - it breaks up the darkness.

There is really only one caveat to wearing this combination: if you are at all fair-skinned or pale, it might be time to break out the rosy blush and lipstick, or risk looking kind of sickly - these deep colors can be a little draining. A warm, flattering blush and wearing the blue (it's not as harsh) closer to your face will definitely help.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

So there is only a week left until Valentine's Day, and whether you are a fan of traditional romance or not, if you are in a relationship, you'll probably celebrate the day in some manner (wow, could my opening be any more ambivalent? It's probably obvious, but I'm not a big hearts and flowers girl). Anyways, while I may not be the holiday's biggest proponent, I am perfectly willing to help you those who are with some gift ideas.

The key to a successful Valentine present to avoid the typical gifts (anything covered in hearts and plastered with cheesy sayings, unless you know they will appreciate the kitsh value) and to think about what the recipient actually wants and/or needs, for the practical types. For instance, a new bottle of her favorite fragrance, or some kind of fun gadget for techies, or a decadent dinner at a restaurant you've both been dying to go to can be good ways to mark the occasion. Of course, the ultimate Valentine celebration would be to whisk them off on a romantic vacation, but that might be a little out of reach, or difficult to plan.

A good guideline to follow when shopping for any gift is to think about what the giftee might desire, but wouldn't splurge on for themselves. Anything cashmere can work, especially a plush robe. Luxe beauty items or grooming tools are also a good call, or a great bottle of wine (or their tipple of choice). Upgrading something - say, getting them a new mp3 player or a state of the art espresso machine - can be an excellent move as well. Basically, think about their interests and hobbies and get them the gifts that they will enjoy, not something you think they should have/use.

After all, choosing something like a high end shaving kit for a scruffy dude, or stripper-wear for a girl who's more conservative (granted, everyone has a wild side, but sticking with the elegant stuff until you know otherwise is a safer bet) tends not to lead to the most...romantic Valentine's Day.

Pink is probably the most feminine color in the spectrum - it's been associated with all things girlish for years. It is the color of health, of playfulness, and passion; pink is softer side of red. We have flamingo pink (interestingly enough, in ancient Egypt, the flamingo was the hieroglyph that stood for the color red), bubble gum pink, blush pink, hot pink, salmon, magenta, and fuschia. Designer Elsa Schiaperelli popularized a signature shade known as shocking pink.

Although the bright shades make quite statement - they are definitely not for wallflowers - there is a shade of pink out there for everyone. However, pink may not have a place in everyone's wardrobe; girls who are not typically feminine may feel a little out of place in pink because it just doesn't suit their personalities. If pink works for you, however, it can be an extremely flattering color. Choosing a shade similar to the color of your cheeks when they are flushed tends to result in hues that cast a gorgeous glow.

Of course, pink is also an ideal color for most kinds of makeup, from a classic pink lipstick to bold fuschia nail polish (perfect with a summer tan). Various shades of rosy pink usually work as natural-looking blush; cooler shades of pink can be even work as eye shadows for the adventurous among us.

While some men can and do wear pink confidently (more power to 'em) pink does tend to serve as visual shorthand for girlhood and femininity. However, we do have the Pink Panther and the band Pink Floyd, Elvis drove a pink Cadillac, and Aerosmith recorded a song called Pink, so this sweet color can still have an edge.

Purple or violet have long been considered the color of royalty - purple was Cleopatra's favorite hue, and the Roman emperors wore Tyrian purple robes embroidered with metallic thread. Of course, purple is also favored by a more modern Prince (think Purple Rain) and psychedelic purple will forever be associated with the sixties and more specifically, Jimi Hendix. It symbolizes magic and mystery, and it is said to spark the imagination and encourage creativity. In politics, a purple state is one that is pretty evenly balanced between Republicans and Democrats.

Purple has many meanings - it is associated with Advent and Lent for Catholitics, yet it is also represents the Gay Pride Movement. Leonardo Da Vinci believed that the power of meditation increased when done in the glow of a purple light, purple prose is writing that is overly elaborate, and a Purple Heart is a medal of honor awarded to a U.S. soldier wounded in battle.

When it comes to fashion, purple is definitely a hot color right now, and we can anticipate plenty of it on the runways during the upcoming fall shows. It's fairly easy to wear as well, provided you match the shade to your skin tone - warm with reddish purples, cool with blue-tinged ones. However, wearing head-to-toe purple can be difficult to carry off.

Most shades of violet look particularly nice with metallic accessories - purple and gold and lilac and silver are classic combinations. Some hues can also be flattering additions to your makeup bag as well; a deep violet smoky eye is intriguing and creative, and a sheer blackberry lip gloss is simply luscious.

Colors of the Fashion Rainbow: Tangled Up In Blue

Blue is considered the most popular choice for a favorite color - and with choices ranging from the palest sky to the darkest navy, it is easy to see why. Not only is it the color of that most all-American of basics, blue jeans, it is considered good luck for bride to don "something blue" on her wedding day and it is often associated with depth, stability, loyalty ("true blue") and hope ("seeing nothing but blue skies"). It is considered to have a calming effect - a bedroom decorated in shades of blue would be a relaxing haven indeed.

Of course, blue is found in the majority of wardrobes because blue jeans are a staple and there is flattering shade of azure out there for virtually everyone. Selecting the right hue is simple - warm complexions can try blues mixed with green and yellow, like turquoises, teals, aquas, and cerulean; cooler complexions tend to be able to wear almost every variation on blue, as they have a blue undertone to their skin. Blue-violets and periwinkles are often especially flattering.

Blue can be naughty (think "Devil in a Blue Dress") or nice (a pastel sundress, perhaps?). It is popular color for uniforms, as it is considered the color of trust - and it flatters most people, which is a welcome side effect. Cops are the men in blue, after all. And it also symbolizes achievement - from blue ribbons for 1st place and blueblooded nobles, this is one color with many positive connotations.

However, no tint is perfect - there are also blue laws, blue language, blue Monday, and of course, singing the blues and feeling blue. The opposite of seeing red (feeling strong emotion, even if it is negative) is feeling blue (which is distinctly apathetic or even depressed). This doesn't stop it from being the most popular color for apparel, though - the Pantone color of 2008 is even blue iris, a blue with a hint of purple.

Green is probably the color with the most mentions in the media lately - after all, it is the signature color of the environmental movement, and the hue has become visual shorthand for eco-friendliness. However, green is also the color of healing, of hope and tranquility, and of stability; it is the color of Ireland and of Islam, with inexperience ("greenhorns", being "green" means being a novice), and of envy. Deep green is associated with money and finance, and medieval brides worn green to symbolize fruitfulness and fertility.

Bright grass green is refreshing and lively, and flattering on many people. Pair it with pink, navy, or yellow for a classic preppy look; or make it a pop of color - try adding a green scarf or handbag to your spring wardrobe. Lime green is quirky and tends to be difficult to wear, but if it suits your personality it can be really fun, and you'll definitely stand out from the crowd (it sets off a tan nicely too).

Deep emerald or forest is a good color for winter evenings - especially when done in luxe cashmere or velvet. Darker shades of green can also be a good alternative to black/gray for a modern smoky eye. Bluish greens tend to be flattering on many people and can have a calming, soothing effect; while sages are soft and elegant. In fact, green is fairly universal - there is a shade out there that works on everyone.

While the term "green" is certainly overused, the color itself is still an excellent choice - and besides, it is much less overused than basic black.

Colors of the Fashion Rainbow: Hello Sunshine!

Yellow is a happy color. There is sunshine yellow, marigold yellow, and golden yellow. Even smiley faces are traditionally yellow. It's considered an optimistic shade, full of life and hope for the future. Remember the yellow brick road in the Wizard of Oz, leading Dorothy and company to the Emerald City? Yellow roses, once viewed a symbol of jealousy, are now considered a symbol of joy and friendship.

Granted, yellow isn't all sunshine and smiles. Yellow journalism is the term for newspapers that sensationalize stories in order to sell papers (so, like every tabloid on the magazine rack?) and cowards are negatively referred to as yellow. And there is that whole yellow fever thing.

Like orange, yellow is usually thought of as a tricky color to wear. The key to selecting the shade of yellow that is right for you is the same as it is for orange - wear warm yellows (such as gold, amber, maize, and other hues tinged with orange) if your skin has a warm/yellow undertone, and cooler shades of yellow for cool/blue undertones, like lemon and citrine.

Likewise, head-to-toe bright yellow is a major statement, and probably not something most people are going to wear anytime soon. However, the color does work well in small doses, in the form of a scarf, a pair of shoes, or for the more fearless, a jacket or sweater. It can liven your face and it certainly stands out, especially in the dead of winter. A yellow swimsuit is a fun choice for a vacation as well - the color highlights a tan (real or from the bottle).

The Colors of the Fashion Rainbow: "Orange" You Glad To Wear This?

Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun. But something about the color orange just lends itself to mirth and humor - in its saturated form, it is sunny, vibrant, and joyful. But in softer tones, it is reminiscent of autumn and somber moods. As the color of Halloween and Thanksgiving, of the Netherlands, of safety signals and terror warnings, and of revolution; orange means different things to different people.

Typically considered a difficult color to wear, orange, burnt orange, and russet shades tend to look best on people with warm undertones in their complexion. Those with cool skin tones tend fare better in more vivid oranges, corals, and tangerines that have a bit of pink mixed in. Orange makeup, however, should almost always be left to the pages of fashion magazines.

It can be a very complimentary color for blue eyes (it's opposite on the color wheel). Vincent Van Gogh once said, "There is no blue without yellow and orange".

Most people would not want to wear orange from head to toe, and for good reason - no one wants to resemble a safety or look like they are wearing a prison jumpsuit (one exception - an orange sundress or bikini works in a tropical locale). Individual pieces can be tough to wear as well - mix it with black and you'll be very Halloween. Paired with navy, brown, or soft neutrals like camel or beige, however, shows off a bold orange items to its best advantage. A deep or burnt orange can also be a good choice for a bag or shoes, especially if you wear a lot of warm colors. It is basic without being too boring - and you can bet you won't see a lot of others with the same thing!

The Colors of the Fashion Rainbow: Red Hot

Red is the color of passion and of power. When you wear bright red, you demand all eyes on you; a deep burgundy or rich crimson is equally attention-grabbing, but in a more subtle way. Red can be elegant, contemporary, or sultry - and it can be all three at the same time. However you choose to wear it, red is definitely not the color for wallflowers.

Although red has some negative connotations (the Scarlet Letter, red-light districts, being caught red-handed), it is also associated with true love (red roses), courage, and good health. It is also considered an appetite stimulant and slightly confrontational (like a matador's cape), so it might be best to avoid in some situations. In many cultures, red is associated with joy and good luck; in football, it means you are 20 yards from scoring. And it is Valentino's signature color - he closes every show with red evening gowns.

It is the ideal color to wear to an event where you'll be in the spotlight; after all, a slinky red dress makes quite an impact. A bright red wool coat is a classic and lively winter look, and many avant garde designs incorporate a bold slash of red. And I can't forget red lipstick - starlets from Marilyn Monroe to Dita Von Teese have made it their signature shade.

The key to rocking red is to choose the hue that has the same undertone as your skin. For example, if you look better in ivory than in white, try rusts, bricks, pomegranates, or other reds with an orange or yellow tinge. If the opposite is true, look for cherries, burgundies, and reds with a hint of blue or pink.

Even if you don't have an in-your-face style, you can still pull off red in small doses. Wear a cozy scarf to warm up your face (the right shade can be incredibly flattering), or try a sheer red gloss. And there is a place for a pair of fun red shoes in virtually everyone's wardrobe.

A: Hi Chris,

I don't know of any permanent stores that sell samples and display items, but you can find all sorts of sample sales in most major cities. Of course, NYC leads the pack in terms of heavily discounted designer goods, but companies like Billion Dollar Babes and Gen Art are slowly but surely bringing the shopping joy to the rest of the country. In Chicago (where I am located), we also have Beta Boutique - a store that is essentially a permanent sample. They also hold regular shopping events where their merchandise is marked down even more. Chicago is also home to tons of interior design and furniture showrooms (and the Merchandise Mart), which hold semi-annual clearance sales where you can get all sorts of interesting things very cheaply. Other big cities might have similar options.

Of course, the web has also made it possibe for people to shop sample sales without traveling to the nearest metropolis as well - sites like the Gilt Groupe and the Art of Shopping hold regular sales featuring merchandise from all sorts of designers. The Fashion Spot forum's "shop by city" section is also a good spot to find news of special sales and new stores. Some brands are also starting to sell their samples online, so it's always a good idea to check the websites of your favorites for end-of-season deals.

Step Away From The Neutrals

So we've reached the gray days of winter (in the northern half of the world, at least), and it has become very tempting to always reach for the tried and true basics, or to dress purely for comfort and warmth. Perhaps this is related to the way it gets dark by 6:00pm, or maybe we just all tired of our cold weather wardrobes.

Whatever the reason, there is no excuse to have your clothing match the clouds in the sky; in fact, bright colors and bold prints can really have an effect on your mood. Think about it - don't you feel different in a gray or beige room versus a colorful one? Which one is more lively? While neutrals can indeed have a calming, relaxing effect, in the dead of winter that can be too much of a good thing.

Check out this article in the Times Online about incorporating more color into your closet. Some of their points are obvious (e.g. ease into vivid hues by wearing one colorful piece with a black or otherwise neutral outfit), but there are some good ideas there - such as mixing shades or choosing prints that are composed of colors located next to each other on the color wheel, like blue with green or red with purple.

Despite my bordering-on-ridiculous love affair with fantastic, glamorous shoes (and the higher the heel/platform, the better), I do recognize that stilettos are not practical or comfortable for everyone. Apparently Harvey Nichols does not feel the same way. Check out their recent ad:

Clearly, an expensive pair of Louboutins = instant sex appeal. It be just me, but I have never had a (heterosexual) guy notice my shoes, except perhaps to say "wow, those are interesting". Apparently the allure of a pair of patent and velvet lace-up platform booties is lost on those with a y-chromosome.

Luxe or Low Cost? What Makes Up The Majority Of Your Stash?

Last week I was organizing my stash of makeup and other beauty products (the new year is a good time to get organized, after all) and I realized that my collection was split pretty evenly down the middle between drugstore brands and higher end luxury brands. Of course, I didn't plan this on purpose, but there are certain products that I always splurge on, as well as items that I won't buy anywhere but CVS or Target.

For instance, I go luxe when it comes to skincare and things like concealer, because having fabulous skin is key - you "wear" your skin every day, after all. Same goes for your hair, especially conditioner. I do use the Whole Foods brand organic shampoo, but I'm a big fan of
Redken and Frederic Fekkai conditioning treatments and styling products. Considering how often I heat style my hair (blow-dryer and hot rollers, I'm old school), I need to pamper it a little.

However, when it comes to cosmetics, especially things that are powders like eyeshadow, blush, and bronzer, I tend to go low-cost (I'd rather spend my spare cash on a fabulous pair of shoes than on a couple Chanel lipsticks or palettes, your mileage may vary). Also, my favorite mascara comes from the drugstore - Maybelline Sky High Curves. Milani eyeshadows and blushes tend to just as richly pigmented as higher end brands, and Revlon Super Lustrous glosses are the smoothest, least-sticky glosses I have ever worn - and they come in tons of colors. Sally Hansen and OPI polishes also give you lots of bang for your buck (and if you can't find the shade you want in OPI's vast selection, it probably doesn't exist).

New Year's Fashion Resolution: Risks Are Rewarded

"Do one thing every day that scares you" said Eleanor Roosevelt. Now, I seriously doubt she was talking about fashion choices, but the statement still applies. Many, many people admire the style risks and outrageous ensembles worn by others, but they stick to the basics for their own outfits. "I could never pull that off" is a common refrain.

Most of the time, however, they are wrong. Granted, not everyone can pull off hot pants in public or things like American Apparel's metallic leggings (and only Madonna could get away with the cone-bra on stage), but everyone can take elements of a particular style and work them into their own wardrobe, no matter how wild, extravagant, or otherwise "out there" they may be.

For instance, if you are a big fan of Dita Von Teese's vintage burlesque glamour, try incorporating things like seamed stockings, pencil skirts, curvy little jackets, and other 1930s, 40s, and 50s styles into your wardrobe. While going for the full effect will probably make you look like you are wearing a costume, a piece or two mixed in with modern items is perfectly wearable and can make your look more interesting.

On the other hand, say you enjoy Gwen Stefani's eclectic fashion, but can't imagine yourself in any of her clothes. Like Dita's highly stylized look, Gwen's wardrobe tends to lean towards the costumey side. However, if you pick one or two pieces and keep the rest of your outfit simple, you can pull off almost everything.

Really, the concept of picking one or two showstopping pieces and making them the center is the key to rocking even the most unusual clothing and accessories. I even have several examples in my own wardrobe, like a pair of black velvet and patent platform shoes that add six inches to my height, or my extensive collection of dramatic long necklaces and earrings (I like my jewelry to make a statement). I also own things like leather pencil skirts, bright paisley print dresses, and a black jacket with a sculptured shawl collar and sash belt with enough structure to stand on its own. Granted, I defintely do not wear these things all at the same time, but I do like to experiment with the kind of clothing that qualifies as memorable. Hey, why not stand out from the crowd?

New Year, Newly Organized Wardrobe: Five Steps To Perfection

There is something thoroughly...satisfying about a perfectly organized closet. Besides, having everything neatly in its place is really necessary if you want to take full advantage of everything in your wardrobe (an aside: I originally wrote "maximize your wardrobe's potential" like some freaky combination of self-help guru and fashion stylist. I need more coffee). And since it is the start of the new year, now is the perfect time to get down to business.

Here are the steps I follow when I organize and edit my wardrobe each season:

1. Set aside a couple hours for the project - you are more much more likely to cut corners if you are rushed.

2. Take everything out of your closet/dressers. Yes, your room will resemble a post-cyclone disaster area, but it is best to start with a clean slate. Don't forgot accessories like shoes, handbags, belts, and jewelry.

3. Divide everything into four categories - the stuff to keep, things that need to be altered, repaired, or cleaned, things to donate, and the stuff that is so far gone it just needs to be tossed out. Be ruthless - if you haven't worn it in a year, with a few exceptions: formalwear, activity-specific sportwear, and anything with sentimental value (try and keep this within reason though, you don't need to save everything with the slightest bit of significance). Also, be sure to try on pieces you are not sure about, especially if it has been awhile since you've worn them. You might be (pleasantly or un-) surprised!

4. Now is the fun part - while you've got everything out, you might as well mix and match the keeper pieces and see what fun new outfits you can make (and shopping in your wardrobe is cheaper than buying new stuff). This is a good time to make a list of things you do need to purchase as well - it is easy to spot the gaps in your wardrobe when everything is laid out.

5. Last but not least, put everything away according to a system. I like to organize by type (pants, jackets, etc.) and then by color (I follow the rainbow, kind of - black/charcoal/brown/red/pink/orange/yellow/green/blue/violet/light browns/light grays/beiges/creams/white). However, you might not be quite as strange as me and go by sleeve or hem length, or whatever works for you.

Yes, this is kind of a painstaking process, but I only do it once a season (and my apartment is pretty small, so if everything is not organized, it drives me insane, so I am probably a little stricter about this than most people). And hey, you'll be really happy once you are finished!

One To Watch: Shoe Designer Jonathan Kelsey

It's no secret that I'm shoe person, and that high heels, metallics, and bold colors are a few of my favorite things. Therefore, it's not surprising that I'm a big fan of Jonathan Kelsey, one of the latest designers to become part of Saks Fifth Avenue's Fashion Incubator.

A veteran of Jimmy Choo, Cacharel, Giles Deacon, and Strenesse, Jonathan Kelsey says his muse is a "sexy strong woman who loves to dance!" and that his designs are influenced by the styles popular in the 70s (a tribute to his mother's shoe collection) and Tim Burton's elegant Gothic aesthetic. The ankle booties are perfectly proportioned (not to mention one of the season's biggest trends), the gunmetal peep-toes are much more unique than most of the metallic shoes in stores now, and the rich gold pumps are simply fabulous.

Here are a few more examples from his Spring/Summer 2008 collection - I especially like the rose gold accents on his snakeskin platform pump (on the right). The other sandals may seem a little...complicated for most women, but hey, when it comes to luxe footwear, too much is never enough.

Chicago: Getting More Fashionable Every Day

For all those who say that the Second City is just not as fashion-forward as its east and west coast counterparts, check out this new site created by Mayor Daley's Fashion Council: the Chicago Fashion Resource. It covers local designers and boutiques and highlights interesting events. While the Mayor's previous events and initiatives have garner mixed results, this one really serves to highlight how interesting Chicago's fashion community really is.

This resource also shows how many designers are inspired by the impressive architecture and the atmosphere of the city around them.

Of course, the site also has boutique information, event listings, and shopping suggestions - and there is more to come in 2008, so be sure to check back.

If you're not in Chicago and are interesting in buying pieces from local designers, try the Second City Style Store, which carries some of these labels.

"Green" Fashion Reconsidered

When it comes to being environmentally friendly, talk is cheap. That is the point of this New York Times article deconstructing the current trend of "green" fashion.

For instance,

“When you only look at the raw materials to ask if something is really green, you are like the blind person holding the tail of the elephant,” said Chris Van Dyke, chief executive of Nau, a three-year-old outdoor clothing line founded on the principle of sustainable practices throughout its production cycle, including the ecological costs of shipping and caring for garments. “There’s a whole lot of other factors you need to assess.”

The point of the article? Before purchasing something just because it is green, you need to do your research. For instance, hemp and bamboo fabrics are typically promoted as eco-friendly alternatives because they are raised without pesticides and grow much faster than cotton, but they are naturally tough fibers that are usually softened with harsh chemical treatments before being woven, which causes more pollution.

Granted, everything is a compromise and nothing will ever be 100% green, but at least we can all educate ourselves and make the best possible choices. However, it's also important to remember that perhaps the greenest clothing is the stuff you already own - buying fewer high quality pieces, taking good care of them, and wearing them for as long as possible might be the most environmentally friendly choice of all. So next time you're craving a fashion fix, "shop in your closet" and try to mix and match things in a new way or rediscover old favorites. Hey, you're being green and you're saving money!

Fortune Magazine's Top Five Trends For 2008

While Fortune is not typically the first place I look to for fashion tips, they have an interesting gallery up with the top five trends for 2008, as predicted by top forecasting firm Tobe.

Their picks?

"The Scarf" as the next must-have accessory.

"Fashion sneakers" from non-athletic labels like Lacoste and Michael Kors.

"See-through clothes" using sheer fabrics like chiffon, organza, and georgette.

"Industrial fabrics" with various high-tech or unusual properties.

"Tomorrow's hangouts", or stores with lounges, salons, bookshops, and other social spaces.

Your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree that these things will be big? The last one is already happening here in Chicago - there are several businesses that combine a salon and boutique - and the concept seems to be well-received. It actually makes a lot of sense to me - when you're getting your hair cut and/or colored, it'd be a logical next step to pick up something new to wear as well, especially if you're making major changes (new hair might require new clothes, you know).

It's One Of A Kind: The One Of A Kind Show

Last night I went to the One of a Kind Show here in Chicago. This event is devoted to unique handcrafted items, and with hundreds of different vendors, you are bound to find something that appeals to you, and anyone else on your list. Some of my favorite items from the show included dramatic, colorful paintings, cozy little knit dresses, and of course, the wide of jewelry (there really was something for every taste - from delicate drop earrings to huge chunky cuff bracelets).

If you are in the Chicago area, the event runs till Sunday (December 9th), so get yourself to the Merchandise Mart. You can find more information and preview what is available at the show here.

Although the One of a Kind Show is indeed fabulous, it is just one example of the many shopping events that are held during the holidays (and all year round in many big cities). Doing your holiday shopping at these events has many positives - besides the fact that you are getting something unique and special, you are benefiting small business owners, artists, and craftspeople. Really, would you rather have a piece of original artwork or something from a big box retailer? I'd say it's no contest.

Keeping Your Cool In The Cold

Okay, cold weather is officially here, at least in many parts of the northern hemisphere. While the snow and ice can definitely look pretty, they tend to present many fashion perils - it's tough to look cute when it is below zero, and I certainly don't blame anyone who sacrifices style for comfort when it's absolutely frigid outside.

However, what if you don't want to make the sacrifice? Is it possible to maintain your chic and not resemble a fluffy marshmallow swaddled in fleece? At the risk of sounding overly enthusiastic, yes! It is possible to not look ten sizes bigger than you actually are in winter clothes. Since I've lived in the northern Midwest (first Detroit, now Chicago) all my life, I had lots of experience with keeping warm in style.

First of all, cashmere, thinsulate, and any similiar material that provides warmth without a lot of bulk are your best friends. My big cashmere scarves are life-savers, particularly when it is windy out. Buying the real stuff is indeed worth it, and if you shop the sales in the spring and summer, when no one is buying cashmere, you can get great deals. Think about it - if it keeps people warm up in the Himalayas (where cashmere comes from), it will keep you very toasty at lower altitudes. I tend to favor bright happy colors to counteract the season's gray gloom, but neutrals work too - depends on your wardrobe and overall look.

Next, you want to define your waist somehow, whether it is with a belted coat, a peacoat, or something with princess seams. Try to find a coat with structure - the more defined your silhouette, the less likely you are to suffer from human marshmallow syndrome. Something with an empire waist, -a-line, or swing style might also work, especially if you're tall. The point is to think tailored, and avoid most parkas and/or anything with puffy quilting. I think this Via Spiga coat is pretty spectacular, and that high collar will protect your neck and throat from the biting wind.

Now for the accessories - while I love the look of a bright coat, it does make sense to buy neutral, particularly if you are investing in something high end. However, if you do that, try wearing a hat, scarf, or gloves that pop with vivid colors or unique patterns (say, houndstooth or zebra print?). Also, mixing it up with the extras is a good way to update an older coat, or just to brighten up your day. There are tons of adorable long gloves out this season that will keep your hands and wrists nice and cozy, so now is the time to find the perfect pair (for you or someone else - holiday gifts, anyone?)

Last but not least, let's consider boots. Yes, they are necessary; no, you don't have to wear Uggs, Sorrels, or those clunky moonboat things. It is possible to find sleek, elegant boots that are fairly if you're willing to dig through Zappos a little, and never underestimate the power of a pair of thick wool or cashmere socks.

Marimekko For H&M

H&M's next special collaboration is straight outta Helsinki - Finnish textile and design firm Marimekko, best known for their vivid prints, is creating that a collection that will be available in stores in April 2008.
Here is some background on the label, which was popular in the sixties and seventies. The brand had fallen on some hard times in the past few years, but they have a new CEO and seem to be undergoing a revival, and hopefully the H&M project will introduce the label to new customers.

Fashion Speaks Louder Than Words: What Do Your Choices Say About You?

First, check out this post by the always clever Sartorialist: A Less Narrow View. He uses a picture of a woman who does not fit into the established definition of femininity, yet still possesses a distinct and interesting personal style, to show how fashion, in many cases, is about more than just flattering your figure and being on trend.

At the most basic level, we wear clothing as a barrier between our bodies and the outside world - to protect us from the elements and because, well, nudity is not exactly socially acceptable in most places. However, most of us (and I'll assume that if you're reading a fashion blog, you fall into this category) use our wardrobe choices to send out signals about who we are - our opinions, our personalities, and what groups we consider ourselves a part of. For instance, consider a woman who's wearing draped velvet with long, fringey scarves (think Stevie Nicks) versus a woman who is wearing a tailored blazer and trousers - you'd get a vastly different impression of their personalities, wouldn't you?

While most people probably do select clothing that they feel flatters them, in terms of color and silhouette, the image/brand/meaning projected by the clothing is perhaps equally essential. After all, a cable-knit cashmere sweater from J.Crew or Ralph Lauren would probably keep you just as warm as a Rick Owens jacket, but the wearers would probably be two very different women. Same goes for a slinky Versace or Cavalli dress as opposed to an Oscar de la Renta ballgown.

Yes, those examples are kind of obvious, but you probably see my point. Your fashion and clothing choices send out messages - for instance, the girl in the Sartorialist post has a definite boyish, androgynous look - she's not classically feminine or "fashionable", really, but you can tell she chose her clothing with care and it really does speak volumes. To quote one of the commenters, it has an "intellectual appeal" that will catch the eye of like-minded people. After all, people tend to dress in order to show the groups they consider themselves part of, whether it's a man in board shorts and reef flip-flops or a woman in ripped black fishnets and goth makeup. Are these the most flattering looks for them? Depends on who you ask.

So what does your look say about you? Does the impression you create with your clothes match up to the "real you", and do you feel a little off if you're wearing something that just doesn't fit your personality? To quote another Sartorialist commenter, do your clothes "act as a filter" for you?

Fashion and Astrology: Does Your Sign Match Your Style?

I don't personally place much stock in astrology, although I do like being a Leo (but that's because Leos are awesome), but I did find this thread on the Fashion Spot interesting. My style does seem to fit my sign - I love deep, rich reds, golds, and purples; I'm a fan of all jewel tones, really. And of course, animal prints in virtually way, shape, or form. My apartment is even decorated in reds and golds!

Inspired by that same thread, I looked up my chart on http://www.astro.com/ so I could see if the other placements were accurate, fashion-wise. For instance, my moon is in Pisces, and I do wear lots of blues, greens, and other watery colors, but I tend to choose the stronger versions of them - say, sapphire blue over a pastel. My rising sign (Aries) seems to work with my style, though - I do favor sharp tailoring and dramatic silhouettes.

So, baby, what's your sign and does it suit your style?

Fashion Shocks: Bold Tights

While black opaque tights are an important part of anyone's legwear wardrobe, something so basic can get boring fast, especially if you tend to wear a lot of solids or neutrals. In fact, a neutral ensemble is one of the easiest things to punch up with a pair of tights or hose in a vivid color. I'm not talking charcoal or navy - think sapphire, violet, or ruby.

Saturated shades may seem like a bit much for most of us, but with the right combination, they can really brighten up your look - and your day (something about wearing happy colors always helps my mood). And if seriously bold shades seem like too major of a committment at first, try a rich eggplant, burgundy, or deep green and work your way to the lighter/brighter end of the spectrum. Who knows? Soon you could be rocking cobalt blue tights with red patent pumps without a care in the world (seriously, couldn't that combo be amazing on the right person?).

You don't necessarily have to be edgy or particularly avant garde to wear bold tights, however, - even J.Crew carries them now!

Traditional Classics or Personal Classics? What's in Your Top Ten?

I've always been an advocate of developing your personal style over just being trendy - while following fashion is fun, interesting, and means of self-expression for many people (myself included), wearing something just because it's "in" when it doesn't fit your look is victim-y. But really, part of the reason that knowing and rocking the current trends (or whatever unique style you prefer) is so much fun is because, well, classics can get boring. And it's tough to define "classic" without limiting yourself at least a little.

Of course, most of the people who create those "10 items every women needs to have" sort of lists would probably agree that personal style is key. However, do those lists really ever encompass the majority of womens' needs (or if they do manage to do this, they are so broad as to be meaningless)? There are traditional classics - the little black dress, the crisp white shirt - and there are personal classics - mine would be a black leather bomber jacket, animal prints, and a chunky turquoise necklace that I wear every spring and summer.

For instance, does everyone really look great in wrap dresses, which is a typical item on the list? And if you live in a warm climate and rarely visit cooler ones, you probably don't need to invest in a heavy coat and boots. Those lists of "classic items you need to own!" are actually pretty subjective - I have a feeling that if we all created our own top ten lists they would be much more varied than the ones that appear in fashion magazines and books every so often.

So what are my top ten items?

1. The previously mentioned black leather jacket - it adds a little toughness to everything I pair it with, it's fairly durable and warm, and it just looks cool.

2. Luxuriously plush cashmere scarves in stand-out colors - they keep you warm and add some color to every outfit, which is necessary during Chicago's cold, gray winters. You can even find them for a steal off-season if you know where to look.

3. Casual cotton jersey dresses - worn on their own in the summer and as a layering piece in cooler months, these are a basic part of my wardrobe. Besides, a simple dress is one of the simplest ways to look pulled together.

4. Knee boots - black works better with my wardrobe, but a high heeled pair of simple leather boots is my go-to footwear from October to March.

5. A variety of tights - I'm not a fan of leggings (they cut off the line of your leg, which is not something you want to do when you're as short as me), but tights add warmth, color, and texture to all my winter ensembles.

6. High-waisted, wide-leg pants - these work well for my body type, and they've got a bit of old-school glamour (think Katharine Hepburn). They can also go from business casual or dressy by switching your top and your accessories.

7. Standout jewelry - like my aforementioned chunky turquoise necklace, a few signature pieces of jewelry can go a long way towards personalizing your wardrobe. They don't necessarily need to be pricey (mine certainly weren't), just indicative of your style.

8. Camisoles in several colors, from neutrals to rich jewel tones - for layering purposes (they're flattering worn with a deep v-neck top) and those situations when cleavage just isn't appropriate.

9. Wide belts to accentuate the waistline and cinch everything in - these were particularly valuable during last season's trapeze/tent dress craze, which was a silhouette that just doesn't work on me. Add a nice waist-defining belt, however, and it's all good.

10. Animal prints - I've always been a fan of animal prints, worn in every possible way. Current favorites include a leopard print peacoat (which I've worn and loved for five years), leopard pony-skin pumps, and a tiger print scarf. Yes, I'm looking forward to Roberto Cavalli's H&M collection, why do you ask?
